Hurricane Maria is gathering strength as it hurtles toward the Leeward Islands, having already brought “widespread damage” to Dominica and is on track to hit Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands as a dangerous and powerful Category 5 hurricane.
Incredible satellite footage of Hurricane Maria shows the devastating size of the storm as forecasters question whether it could reach the US East Coast next week.
Hurricane Maria’s eye smashed over Dominica with devastating effects, ravaging the island with 160mp and even ripping the Prime Minister’s roof off of his residence.
Prime Minister Roosevelt said on his Facebook page that “initial reports are of widespread devastation” and said he feared there would be death due to landslides.
Commenting on his properties roof, he said: “I am at the complete mercy of the hurricane. House is flooding.”
According to the latest NOAA National Hurricane Center (NHC) path updates, the storm is now on track to wallop Puerto Rico on Wednesday.
