Footage from the scene showed a man sprawled on the floor with what looked like a knife lying on the ground.

Images showed police swarming over the man as he lay prone on the pavement while crowds watched on.

The incident took place in New Street, near a bank and busy railway station, just after 1pm.

Police said they had been called by terrified shoppers after a man was seen brandishing a blade outside New Street station.

Witness Darryl Godden told the Birmingham Mail: “I heard the scuffle, lots of shouting and jostling but didn’t see him go down.

“I heard officers say “drop the knife” and give taser warnings.”
