Hurricane Irma, upgraded to a Category 4 storm overnight, made landfall in Florida Keys on Sunday with 130mph winds.

A second huge Cetegory 4 storm, Hurricane Jose, is continuing its way across the wind-ravaged Leeward Islands.

And the National Hurricane Center published a fresh map on Sunday showing storms which could form into a third cyclone over the next few days.

Currently, the storms, which could develop into Hurricane Lee, are located south of the Cape Verde Islands but are expected to move towards the US this week.

In a warning, the centre wrote: “Showers and thunderstorms associated with a tropical wave located a few hundred miles south of the Cabo Verde Islands continue to show some signs of organisation.

“Environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for some development, and a tropical depression could form during the next few days while the system moves generally northwestward over the eastern Atlantic Ocean.”

Tropical depressions can lead to tropical storms before potentially intensifying into hurricanes.
