Hurricane Irma has wreaked havoc across the Caribbean after the storm made landfall on several smaller islands, leaving at least 22 people dead as a result.

Damage in Cuba is expected to mirror the devastation across much of the Caribbean, but very few details have emerged from the island after winds destroyed Cuban meteorological equipment.

Harrowing video from Cuba shows the vicious winds lashing the coastal area of Caibarien when Hurricane Irma made landfall.

Trees can be seen almost ripped from the ground as the estimated winds of more than 160 mph pummelled Cuba.

Elsewhere, power lines and palm trees have been uprooted and huge waves of up to eight metres in height were seen in Cayo Romano, north of Camaguey.

Other reports include severe damage to roofs and facades of houses, with the most significant damage reported in the northern keys of the province.

NOAA National Hurricane Centre now expects the deadly weather to move toward Florida as it batters the entire state with hurricane-force winds.

The NOAA National Hurricane Centre (NHC) 5am EDT update means hurricane and storm surge watches have now been extended northward from the Florida West coast from Anclote River to Chasshowitzka.

The path of the eye of the storm is continuing to move over the Camaguey archipelago of Cuba as a Category 4 hurricane but expected to rise again to Category 5 as it reaches Florida.
