Hurricane Jose was upgraded after it shows sustained winds of more than 150 miles per hour, the NHC said.

It comes after Hurricane Irma was downgraded form a Category 5 to 4 as it nears Florida.

Evacuations have been called in several Caribbean islands as Jose approaches, with officials already struggling to deal with catastrophic damage caused by Irma.

The NHC confirmed Jose had been upgraded at 3pm BST.

Data from an Air Force Hurricane Hunter plane has indicated maximum winds are now more than 15mph, making Jose “an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane.”

The NHC will provide more information in its next update, due in 40 minutes or so.

Evacuations were already in place in Antigua and Barbuda before the upgrade was announced.

The Antigua Met service tweeted this afternoon: “Hurricane watch in place for Antigua and Barbuda.
