The Hurricane Irma video posted on social media by Joel Nihlean shows the storm is significantly larger than the infamous 1992 hurricane.
At the time, Andrew was the costliest hurricane in US history causing about $50 billion of damage in current dollars.
Weather Channel senior hurricane specialist Bryan Norcross told CTV news “The effect of Irma on the state of Florida is going to be much greater than Andrew’s effect.
“We’re dealing with an entirely different level of phenomenon. There is no storm to compare with this. Unless you go way back to 1926.”
According to the latest Hurricane Irma path update from the NOAA National Hurricane Center (NHC), the storm is now Category 4 but remains “extremely dangerous”.
Hurricane Andrew became a Category 5 Storm just before hitting Florida were it left a trail of devastation.
The latest storm track map shows Hurricane Irma set to hit on Saturday night before tracking up towards Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina.
The NHC said: “On the forecast track, the eye of Irma should continue to move westward away from the Turks and Caicos Islands and toward the southeastern Bahamas this morning.
