Hurricane Irma’s passage through the West Indies and Leeward Islands has caused great destruction to the many nations in the region.

The Island of Barbuda felt the strongest power of the storm, with roughly 95 per cent of the island’s structures being levelled to the ground.

The cyclone which has weakened into a category 4 hurricane, tore through the Virgin Islands, killing at least three on the US controlled portions of the archipelago.

Sir Richard Branson, who owns the island of Nekker just north of Virgin Gorda, said that Nekker was left “completely and utterly devastated” by the cyclone.

“It is a traumatic time here in the British Virgin Islands,” the millionaire posted on his Virgin website blog. “I have never seen anything like this hurricane.”

The hurricane passed over the islands with torrential downpours and deadly winds. Multiple bays across the islands were left flooded, and power was cut off across Virgin Gorda.

One terrifying photo, taken in the Paraquita Bay on the British Island of Tortola, shows dozens of yachts piled up on top of each other.

Elizabeth Doody, who was caught up in the hurricane, told Komo News that the experience was “terrifying”.
