Irma’s path of destruction completely devastated the British Virgin Islands, forcing Governor Gus Jaspert to declare the state of emergency.

In a radio message to the locals, Mr Jaspert said: “I come to you with a heavy heart after experiencing and observing the extent of devastation caused by Hurricane Irma.

“I have declared a state of emergency for the territory. All of us have been affected by Irma and some more than others. Apart from the structural damage. There have sadly been reports of casualties and fatalities.

Hurricane Irma has left an extraordinary trail of devastation across the British Virgin Islands with homes, trees, and cars damaged by the deadly storm.

The US National Hurricane Center said the eye of Hurricane Irma passed over the British Virgin Islands with winds of up to 110 mph to the west at Buck Island in the US Virgin Islands.

At least 10 people have been killed as the storm barrels its way across the Caribbean.

Irma path models show the storm is now on course for a ‘catastrophic’ direct hit on the US city of Miami.
