Hurricane Irma’s deadly path of destruction has sent thousands of Florida locals into a panic as they try to flee ahead of the storm’s arrival.

Shocking footage from ABC shows a Hillsborough County highway completely packed with cars following an evacuation warning issues by Governor Rick Scott.

The latest tracking map shows Hurricane Irma is set to hit Florida around 2am on Sunday morning – although some suggest it may hit slightly later in Orlando at 2am on Monday with wind speeds of 130mph.

Hurricane Irma is currently over the Caribbean, having caused carnage on the islands of St Martin and Anguilla as it moves toward Florida.

Irma is a Category 5 storm battering all in its path with sustained winds of up to 185mph – Florida has declared a state of emergency.

Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine described Irma as a “nuclear hurricane” and pleaded with people to evacuate soon.

He said: “I’ll do anything in my power to convince them this is a very serious storm. This is a nuclear hurricane. They should leave the beach, they must leave the beach.
