Mark Straussman from CBS news said that concerns were growing over the 25 cranes which are erected among Miami’s skyscrapers.

These cannot be taken down before Irma arrives and local residents are being told to leave to avoid being hit if the colossal cranes collapse.

Most troubling is the counter weights which cannot be secured and can weigh up to 15 tonnes. These could cause significant damage if they came loose in the storm.

Maurice Pons, deputy director of Miami’s building department told the Miami New Times: ”There are 20 to 25 construction cranes in the City of Miami.

“These tower cranes are designed to withstand winds up to 145 miles per hour, not a Category 5 hurricane.

“The crane’s arm has to remain loose; it is not tied down. The arm’s counterbalance is very heavy and poses a potential danger if the arm collapses.”

Hurricane Irma is still a Category 5 storm battering all in its path with sustained winds of up to 185mph.

Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine described the storm as ‘nuclear’ as he urged the evacuation of the city which lies on the southernmost tip of the east coast.
