The category 5 hurricane has wreaked havoc across the Caribbean, killing at least nine people, as it heads towards the USA.

The latest National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecast predicts that the eye of the storm could reach Florida by 2am EDT on Sunday.

Florida is now bracing for the arrival of the hurricane, with a state of emergency issued for Duval county which includes Jacksonville.

The NHC’s latest path map suggests that Irma’s eye could arrive east of Jacksonville, near the Georgia border, around 8am EDT (1pm BST) on Monday morning.

Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry said: “I can’t stress the importance of this. This is a unique event with a storm facing the entire state… If you have the ability, please leave.”

Mandatory evacuations have not been issued yet, but the situation could change if conditions deteriorate over the weekend.

Officials have advised local residents to be aware of possible heavy traffic later in the week when thousands of people could make their way out of the city.

Mayor Curry said: “Prepare a kit, know your evacuation zone, and create a plan as to what you’re going to do if you’re going to be here or in the event if there is an evacuation.
