The hurricane is set to batter the Caribbean today before reaching the mainland at the weekend.

In an advisory on Wednesday morning, the National Hurricane Centre warned that Irma could bring dangers including life-threatening storm surges, destructive winds, flash floods and mud slides to Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas and beyond.

A state of emergency has been declared in Florida, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

The first mandatory evacuations were ordered in Florida Keys on Wednesday morning Monroe County, which includes the Keys and covers the southernmost stretch of the state, began mandatory evacuations of tourists and visitors on Wednesday morning.

The county is also home to around 80,000 residents, who were ordered to evacuate beginning Wednesday evening.
