HURRICANE Irma is barrelling towards the US mainland prompting evacuations in Florida before the “potentially catastrophic” storm hits.

The hurricane is set to batter the Caribbean today before reaching the mainland at the weekend.
Irma is the most powerful hurricane to threaten the Atlantic coast in more than a decade and it has swelled into a monster force with maximum sustained winds near 185 mph.
Forecasters say the storm poses an increasing threat to South Florida.
In an advisory on Wednesday morning, the National Hurricane Centre warned that Irma could bring dangers including life-threatening storm surges, destructive winds, flash floods and mud slides to Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas and beyond.
A state of emergency has been declared in Florida, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
The first mandatory evacuations were ordered in Florida Keys on Wednesday morning Monroe County, which includes the Keys and covers the southernmost stretch of the state, began mandatory evacuations of tourists and visitors on Wednesday morning.
The county is also home to around 80,000 residents, who were ordered to evacuate beginning Wednesday evening.
