John Everard insisted sanctions from China would be a “body blow” to North Korea.

China’s Commerce Ministry issued an order banning imports of coal, iron ore, lead concentrates and sea food from North Korea following sanctions being agreed by the UN earlier this month.

Speaking on Sky News, the former UK ambassador to North Korea claimed the sanctions imposed may lead to Kim Jong-un developing nuclear weapons at a faster rate.

He said: “If the Chinese actually do this, and remember they said they were going to do implement sanctions straight after the United Nations Security Council passed the vote.

“It’ll be a body blow to the North Korean economy. Remember that China controls about 90 per cent, probably more of all of North Korea’s trade.

“If China stops importing these things then North Korea is in deep economic trouble.”

Mr Everard reiterated how many problems could be caused as a result of the sanction implemented by China.

He added: “But of course we don’t know how the regime is going to respond to this.

“We all hope that it will decide the price of continuing to develop its nuclear weapons, of launching its missiles, has simply become so great. That the risk of political instability caused by economic stress is a direct threat to the regime and that this will bring it to the negotiating table.

“But equally it’s possible it will conclude that if its economy is about to nosedive then it needs to develop a credible nuclear weapon fast.”

China is by far North Korea’s largest trading partner and the new sanctions could force Pyongyang to pursue diplomatic means to end the tension between the state and the United States.

President Donald Trump promised to retaliate with “fire and fury” after American intelligence claimed North Korea were considering a missile attack on US territory Guam.
