As Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un continue to trade blows, the German Chancellor said “escalating the rhetoric is the wrong answer” in a dig apparently aimed at the US President.

Instead of threats and ultimatums, Mrs Merkel called for the North Korea crisis to be resolved through diplomacy as Mr Trump once again used social media to take aim at Kim Jong-un.

He tweeted: “Military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely. Hopefully Kim Jong Un will find another path!”

But speaking at a press conference in Berlin, Mrs Merkel poured cold water on Mr Trump’s sabre-rattling.

She said: “I believe that an escalation of rhetoric will not contribute to a solution of this conflict.”

On Tuesday, Mr Trump said Pyongyang would see “fire and fury like the world has never seen” if the rogue regime continued to provoke the United States.

Mrs Merkel said: “I do not see a military solution to this conflict rather I see continuous work like we saw in the UN Security Council with members with resolutions in view of North Korea.”

The most powerful woman in Europe called for the close cooperation of “affected countries” which she listed as the United States, China, South Korea and Japan.

She said: “Germany will be intensively involved with the potential solutions that we see – not of a military manner.
