The Ulchi-Freedom Guardian exercise, which is conducted annually, is expected to go ahead as orignially planned and will begin on August 21, according to Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Logan.

The exercise could stoke tensions between North Korea and its neighbours, with Kim Jong-un previously criticising the close relationship between Seoul and Washington.

Both militaries will press ahead with huge sea, land and air exercises later this month which will involve tens of thousands of troops.

However, the timing has left even greater cause for concern because it is within this timeframe that Pyongyang claims it will be ready to fire four Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missiles toward the US territory of Guam.

Previous exercises have angered North Korea and the South Korean and US militaries are believed to conduct “decapitation strikes” during the event, which are practice runs to kill Kim Jong-un and the key figures of the despotic regime.

Earlier today, President Trump said military solutions are “locked and loaded” after a series of threatening statements about North Korea and its leader.
