Kim Jong-un’s announcement that he is looking into the logistics of striking US military base in Guam is not the first time he has threatened America – but it is the first time he has singled a territory out.

Following a failed missile test in April, Kim warned of a ‘super mighty pre-emptive strike’ to wipe out US forces in South Korea and reduce its mainland ‘to ashes’.

It was dismissed by most experts as saber-rattling but his most recent claim to strike Guam, an American territory around 2,100 miles from the Korean Peninsula, seems worryingly more specific.

Kim’s most recent remarks came hours after US President Donald Trump promised ‘fire and fury like the world has never seen’ if Pyongyang threatens his country again.

There has always been a shadow of doubt cast over Kim’s nuclear credentials but analysts now believe the North does have missiles capable of reaching the Pacific island, where thousands of US personnel are based.

And while ‘heightened tensions’ between Kim and Trump have previously been brushed aside as nothing more than a clash of egos, military experts are now admitting this ‘verbal spat could turn into a military clash’.

North Korea recently claimed to have successfully created a miniaturised nuclear warhead (with unverified claims he has as many as 60). The US already has more than 6,800.

The US also has by far the more fearsome military overall – comprising around one million active personnel, 13,000 aircraft, 5,800 tanks and 400 naval vessels – but its presence in the North Pacific is far smaller.
