The horrifying revelation follows a series of controversial missile launches by Kim Jong-un’s hermit state.
Japan today released its annual defence report, in which it admitted concerns about North Korea’s nuclear programme.
They said Kim could already be capable of launching a nuclear attack, with mystery surrounding the exact sophistication of the rogue state.
The paper said: “It is conceivable that North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme has already considerably advanced and it is possible that North Korea has already achieved the miniaturisation of nuclear weapons and has acquired nuclear warheads.
“Since last year, when it forcibly implemented two nuclear tests and more than 20 ballistic missile launches, the security threats have entered a new stage.”
This announcement will set alarm bells ringing in Washington, after it was revealed last month North Korea is now capable of attacking the US mainland.
Japanese party lawmakers are now calling for the government to acquire the capability to attack enemy bases rather than operate purely in terms of defence.
