CHINA has sent a warning to the feuding North Korea and US governments by shutting off an area of the Yellow Sea for a four-day naval drill.

Precise details of the exercise have not been released by Beijing, save for the fact the event will begin on Saturday, August 5, and end on Tuesday, August 8.

The drill comes amid escalating tensions between Pyongyang and Washington, with Chinese officials becoming increasingly concerned about being dragged into war.

Donald Trump has put pressure on Beijing to try and dissuade its North Korean allies from progressing its illicit missile programme.

North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un conducted to the country’s latest weapons test late last month, when he launched an intercontinental ballistic missile believed to have been capable of hitting the US mainland.

America responded by staging a military exercise with its allies South Korea and conducting its own test launch of its THAAD defence missile system in California.

Analysts said Chinese military drill, which comes just a week after a similar exercise, can be read as a message to Kim Jong-un to desist.

Malcolm Davis, an expert in Chinese defence at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, told the South China Morning Post: “It’s basically a warning to Pyongyang.

“The Chinese would really like to get the North Koreans to back down, but it largely depends on whether [North Korean leader] Kim Jong-un is ready to do that.”
