The southern European country has about 2,000 troops in Lazio, Umbria and Abruzzo and a total of 7,000 throughout the entire nation.

The move is part of the ‘Safe Streets’ operation which is now in its ninth year which is used to keep a watchful eye on various possible activities – terrorism, migrants, fires and drought as well as the current ‘Lucifer’ heatwave that has swept through Italy as well as a number of European countries.

Serena Natolini, a 28-year-old lieutenant in the 2nd Bolzano regiment, said: “We are required to present ourselves as public security agents.

“And people understand that we are here for them. They approach us to report accidents and if it’s hot, they often bring us water. They have welcomed us.”

The operation sees the rather surreal sight of uniformed, armed soldiers patrolling the Italian beaches amongst the holidaymakers.

Ms Natolini said: “We pay attention to all suspicious attitudes. But above all to the way people are dressed; if someone is too covered, it may already be a signal to action.
