Furious Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev described the move as a humiliating defeat for US President Trump and warned of new retaliatory measures.

He said Russia would cope with the challenge and only get stronger, but warned it had ended “hopes for improving our relations with the new US administration”.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday put his signature on legislation against Moscow, despite branding it as “significantly flawed”.

The law aims to punish Russia for its suspected meddling in the 2016 US election.

In a Facebook post, PM Medvedev signalled stiff new sanctions as a declaration of an “all-out trade war”.

US-Russia relations had deteriorated under Barack Obama’s administration, but President Trump’s pledge to improve ties with their former Cold War foe had been welcomed by Moscow.

However, hopes for a reset relationship have not materialised.

Signing off the new laws, billionaire President Trump expressed his doubts, but said: “Despite its problems, I am signing the bill for the sake of national unity”

But in a fiery Facebook post, Russia’s prime minister said it reflected the US leader’s “impotence”.

He wrote: “Trump’s administration has demonstrated total impotence by surrendering its executive authority to Congress in the most humiliating way.

“The American establishment has won an overwhelming victory over Trump.”

He added: “It is a declaration of a full-fledged economic war on Russia. Third, the Trump administration has shown its total weakness by handing over executive power to Congress in the most humiliating way.
