US Air Force personnel will oversee the launch of the lethal Minuteman-3 ICBM from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on Wednesday morning.

A spokesperson for the US Air Force said the test of the unarmed rocket was “long planned” and “routine”.

But it comes just days after North Korea angered the international community by firing another ICBM into the Sea of Japan.

America’s long range missile is expected to fly more than 4,000 miles to a test range in the Pacific between 12.01am and 6am (PST) tomorrow.

Air Force Global Strike Command confirmed it will carry out the ICBM test – the fourth in California this year – to ensure the effectiveness, readiness and accuracy of the weapon.

In a statement US Air Force spokesperson captain Mark Graff said the test will “assess the reliability of our ICBM force in order to maintain a credible nuclear deterrent capability”.

North Korea has declared itself a “nuclear power” after launching two ICBMs last month – sending shock waves across the world.
