A FORMER British ambassador to North Korea has warned “we should be very worried” as Kim Jong-un increases his regime’s nuclear threat.

The concern comes after the rogue nation deployed an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) that landed in the Sea of Japan – a stark warning to US President Donald Trump.

Speaking to LBC, John Everard, who is also a former coordinator of the United Nations Panel of Experts on sanctions against North Korea, said the country was developing warheads faster than expected.

He said: “There’s a bit of sabre rattling in there but yes we should be very worried, it’s quite clear that they’re developing their missiles much faster than the experts were telling us a year ago and that they are serious about this.

“Remember not long ago, the Pentagon thought it would take the North Koreans two or three years to be able to put a nuclear device on top of an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile.

“Two days ago they came out rather red-faced and said actually they’ve now changed that – they think maybe sometime next year, it’s getting quite close.”

He said Kim Jong-Un was intent on countering America’s “hostile policy” and “intimidating” South Korea.

It comes as tensions escalate over North Korea’s refusal to end its nuclear programme.

Mr Everard said: “They want two things, firstly they want to be able to threaten a nuclear strike on the United States because they believe that this will effectively get the Americans off their back and end what they call the American’s hostile policy towards them, that’s the defensive bit.
