BREXIT is causing cracks across the European Union as individual member states start outlining what THEY want from Britain.

Brussels has attempted to show a united front between the remaining 27 EU nations, but the facade looks as though it is falling as demands are made behind closed doors.

Each of the member states has its own interests in Britain, and is looking to protect them despite calls from Jean-Claude Juncker and chief ally Angela Merkel for the bloc to unite.

However, during negotiations EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier and his team will have to prioritise which cases they will push for and which will drop to the bottom of the list.

Essentially – they will pick between countries – a move which could see internal conflicts erupt with economic powerhouse Germany and France uniting amid fears of a struggle for power as southern and eastern members of the bloc splinter.

UKIP leadership contender Jane Collins said the EU’s position on Brexit was “a bun fight”.

“They are trying to make out they are coming at this from a united negotiating position but in reality it’s 27 countries all having a scrap to try to get their demands met.

“What no one has explained is why the UK should take any of these demands seriously: why should Croatia get to decide that their citizens can apply for settled status when the British people voted to take control of our borders?

“Why should we play ball when Spain and the Commission are threatening to ignore international law over Gibraltar?

“Why should we cower at Frau Merkel’s untenable, economically nonsensical position when we have the rest of the world to make trade arrangements with and the number one global superpower wanting a free trade deal with us?

“Michel Barnier might think he speaks for the whole of the bloc but the cracks are already starting to show. The other countries in the EU will get a lesson in just why the UK voted to leave: we didn’t want to compromise our national self determination, security or our economy for the sake of a political project. We wanted to put Britain first.”

So what exactly is pushing the EU to breaking point?
