The US President derided the bloc’s trading influence in a provocative tweet this afternoon as Britain’s international trade secretary Liam Fox held talks with Washington over an economic pact.

But his intervention drew scorn from of the EU parliament’s most influential representatives, who accused the US supremo of being “afraid” of striking a similar trade deal with Brussels.

One of the Republican’s first actions in power was to scrap talks on the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) agreement, which had been a decade in the making.

Mr Trump and eurocrats have been at each other’s throats once more over the past few weeks after a long period of detente, during which trans-Atlantic relations appeared to be on the mend.

But the start of trade talks with Britain – a key policy objective of the Trump administration – has injected venom back into the relationship with both sides now struggling to keep a lid on rhetoric.

The US president upped the ante this morning when he goaded Brussels by tweeting: “Working on major Trade Deal with the United Kingdom. Could be very big and exciting. JOBS! The E.U. is very protectionist with the U.S. STOP!”

His remarks prompted a bemused and angry response in Europe, where his campaign pledge of “America First” and pledges to bring back heavy industry were largely perceived as protectionist and isolationist.
