Nigel Farage has revealed that he is growing extremely concerned that Brexit will happen in name only.

The former Ukip leader told the BBC’s The World Tonight that Britain started to slide down a slippery slope by diluting what people voted for in the EU referendum.

In a scathing assessment, the leading voice of the Brexit cause said the Government was trying to distort the referendum by keeping open borders and European courts.

He warned that big business which backed Remain as well as joining the euro was dominating the argument around Brexit.

Mr Farage told the BBC’s James Coomarasamy: “There is a big expectation among Brexiteers that by March 2019 we will be out of the EU, out of the ECJ and out of the single market.

“But there now appears to be a consensus among the political class that this will not happen.”

He explained: “I have no doubt that leaving the EU will happen, but I am beginning to think that we may leave in name only.

“It looks like a minimum of five years until we get back control of our borders.

“If these transitional agreements go on until 2022, that’s five years since we voted to leave. I mean, there is even talk of transitional arrangements going on until 2023.”

The MEP added: “I am concerned that we will leave the EU but finish up with an open border, the ECJ still having a say, and paying a massive exit bill.

“If that happens, millions of people will say, what on earth did we vote Brexit vote?

“If we do not get what we thought we were voting for last year, there will be huge public anger on the streets.”
