According to the Australian Defence Force (ADF), The Chinese People’s Liberation Army-Navy Type 815 Dongdiao-class auxiliary general intelligence (AGI) vessel was operating off the northeast coast during the Talisman Sabre manoeuvres.

The ship did not stray into Australian territorial waters but was inside the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone in the Coral Sea.

The vessel is fitted with advanced communications systems designed to eavesdrop on other militaries.

In a statement, the ADF said: “The vessel’s presence has not detracted from the exercise objectives. Australia respects the rights of all states to exercise freedom of navigation in international waters in accordance with international law.”

Senior Australian military figures condemned China’s actions, particularly while more than 30,000 troops are taking part in biennial war games.

Dr Euan Graham, from the Lowy Institute, told local media: “At the moment what we see is a double standard where China picks the areas of the Law of the Sea that it likes and refuses to implement those that it doesn’t.
