The hermit state’s sole SINPO-class experimental ballistic missile submarine (SSBA) has allegedly been engaged in “unusual deployment activity” over the past 48 hours.

It is believed the submarine sailed for around 100km out into the Sea of Japan, which is thought to be its longest known voyage to date.

The trip also placed the vessel in international waters for the first time – and now experts fear the voyage could have been used to prepare for a future ballistic missile test.

38 North, a think tank which analyses the rogue country, claims Kim’s submarine-launched missiles needed more testing.

In a report, 38 North said: “Continued testing from a submarine is essential to bring these missiles into service.

“It is likely that the North will have to conduct additional tests in the future in order to develop a viable weapon system.”

Using satellite analysis, the monitor also noted a number of movements in the dock in the eastern city of Sinpo.

And they suggested the movement of a submersible barge used for missile tests could be carried out for the ”long-term preparations for a test, at-sea deployments, pre-deployment training and routine maintenance or a combination of these.”

Joseph S Bermudez Jr wrote: “While the precise reason is unclear, one possibility is that it may have been long-term preparations for the recently reported voyage or an upcoming missile test.”

The US is watching in particular for further testing of North Korean radars and communications that could be used in a launch.
