RUSSIA and China have “dangerously” misstepped over their dealings with Kim Jong-un’s regime, an ex US official has said.

Daniel Russel, former US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, said the superpowers’ response to the rogue nation was “very disappointing”.

China’s president Xi Jinping urged Donald Trump to show restraint towards North Korea in a phone call earlier this year despite growing alarm over the murderous regime’s nuclear plans.

But Mr Trump has since warned of a “severe” punishment for the North Korean leader following the country’s intercontinental ballistic missile test.

Speaking on the Today programme, on BBC Radio 4, Mr Russel said: “The initial response by both Russia and China coming out of the summit being held in Moscow at the time of the test was very disappointing.

“To call on all parties to exercise restraint is not only to say nothing but it’s a failure to identify the cause of the instability in North East Asia which is North Korea’s headlong pursuit of a nuclear armed missile capability.

“This is dangerous and both China and Russia have, in the past, described us as a threat to international peace and security and have taken pretty strong measures through the council.”

Asked if the United States should follow China’s lead, he added: “China are worried about North Korea for somewhat different reasons even though we agree on important things, such as the fact that North Korea should not and must not have nuclear weapons.”

The US president sent a warning shot to North Korea saying there will be “consequences” for its “very, very bad behaviour”, during a joint press conference with Poland.
