Forecasters say a heat wave will hit Southern California starting Thursday, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 120F in places like Coachella Valley.

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning, with triple digits forecast for Friday and Saturday in Coachella Valley, Woodland Hills, Burbank and areas surrounding the San Bernardino Mountains, the LA Times reported.

Southern Sierra Nevada is also facing an elevated fire danger, while experts advise residents in to stay hydrated inside air-conditioned rooms.

The NWS says the heat, which will affect the Santa Barbara South Coast and interior sections of Southwest California, is coming from high pressure building over the desert Southwest that will expand westward.

‘Temperatures will climb each day this week and become more uncomfortable from Thursday through Sunday for many valleys and mountains of southwest California, including the foothills of the south Santa Barbara coast,’ the NWS said.

Increasing temperature will be accompanied by elevated moisture moving up from Mexico that could add humidity to the heat wave.
