Moscow and Beijing also urged North Korea to abide by UN resolutions on missile testing after the hermit nation has continued to ignore the international condemnation its missile testing has brought.

Both countries have called on their international allies to support their initiative on North Korea.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin has agreed to join Chinese president Xi Jinping in calling for Seoul and Washington to bring their joint military activities to an end.

Both Russia and China are staunch critics of the US aim to deploy the THAAD anti-missile system to South Korea, which they consider a potential threat to the stability of the region.

Mr Putin and his Chinese counterpart Mr Xi met in Moscow today at the start of Xi’s two-day visit to Russia.
