EMMANUEL Macron has been accused of acting like royalty as the French president unveiled plans for his five-year term at a lavish ceremony in the opulent palace of Versailles.

The new leader addressed both houses of parliament as he tried to restore old-fashioned grandeur to the role of president, according to his aides.

While his predecessor wanted to be regarded as down-to-earth, Mr Macron reportedly wants to embody a “Jupiterian” vision of the presidency – whereby the president rarely speaks except to issue orders.

This will no doubt be aided by his speech at the palace of Versailles, which was billed as a US-style state of the nation address – a previously unseen phenomenon in French politics.

However, some of Mr Macron’s political rivals criticised the move and vowed to boycott the ceremony.

Jean-Luc Melenchon, head of the leftist France Unbowed group and former presidential rival of France’s new leader, said “Macron the pharaoh” had crossed a line in his “monarchical” approach to his new role.

The press and opposition have accused the 39-year-old of pulling the rug from under his premier’s feet to assert his dominance, and slammed his refusal to take questions after his remarks.
