The 18th century house which belonged to Thomas Jefferson has fallen victim to a ransomware cyber attack – just days before the nation prepares to celebrate the Fourth of July.

Computers and telephone systems at Monticello, the third U.S. president’s residence and plantation near Charlottesville, Virginia, were hit by a malicious file-scrambling bug on Tuesday.

The attack is not believed to be linked to the recent Goldeneye and Petya viruses which have affected governments and companies across the globe, including the UK, U.S. and Russia.

Ann Taylor, Thomas Jefferson Foundation executive vice president, said Monticello was the victim of a ransomware attack which had demanded an undisclosed amount of money.

‘Our staff is working with manual systems, but we welcomed a lot of guests yesterday,’ she told NBC29.

‘The weather is beautiful, and we’re looking forward to July Fourth.
