North Korea has warned its rivals they are making a ‘fatal miscalculation’ if they believe sanctions imposed by the UN will deter it from developing nuclear weapons.

In a rare and inflammatory statement at the UN Security Council, Deputy Ambassador Kim in Ryong said conditions the US was attaching to its offer to talk with the reclusive nation were ‘unjust’.

‘Their mean and indiscreet act would go in just the opposite direction to what they want,’ Kim said during a debate on non-proliferation.

He went on: ‘The US kept talking about dialogue… But it makes no sense to talk about dialogue with unjust preconditions attached, and when they are applying maximum pressure.’
