Riot police have scrambled to far-right and anti-fascist protest marches in central London.

The EDL took to the streets on Saturday, with United Against Facism and United Against Extremism also in the area.

Scotland Yard said it was taking action under public order laws.

The EDL descended on Trafalgar Square, while the Football Lads Alliance marched on London Bridge – the scene of the deadly terror attack that killed eight people earlier this month.

Meanwhile, in Birmingham up to 200 Britain First supporters have taken to the streets to protest while a similar number got together in Liverpool.

The protests come in the wake of other deadly terrorist attacks on Finsbury Park mosque, the Manchester Arena and also Westminster Bridge.

Superintendent Emma Richards said: “We have made the decision to impose conditions based on current tensions and concerns, information about the intentions of the organisers of these events and intelligence from previous marches held by similar groups.

“We believe the approach is appropriate.

“We have a duty to ensure that the community in central London can go about their daily business not unduly impacted by demonstrations taking place.”
