The poll by Pew Research Centre revealed that 65 per cent of people in Spain want a referendum on EU membership, which was the highest of any country polled.

Besides Spain, support for a national referendum on EU membership was also high in France, Greece and Italy.

The countries with the highest number of people wanting to leave the EU were Greece and Italy with 35 per cent of people in favour of a Grexit or a Italexit.

Eurosceptic momentum is building in Italy and Greece due to the migration crisis, the poor economy and the migration crisis.

An Italian referendum would be particularly damaging to the union as it is one of the core members.

The survey questioned almost 10,000 people from France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

An average of 53 per cent of people across the nine European countries said that they supported having their own national referendums on continued EU membership.
