Commons leader Andrea Leadsom said the State Opening of Parliament would take place on June 21 after two day delays.

The DUP and Conservatives are in “broad agreement” on major principles including Brexit, according to a Tory source.

The Queen was due to deliver the list of laws the government was hoping to get approved by Parliament over the next year, on Monday, June 19 – the same day Brexit talks were due to take place.

However, because the Conservative Party failed to gain a majority at last Thursday’s General Election, the party is negotiating with Northern Ireland’s DUP to gain their support.

In a statement, Ms Leadsom said: “The Government has agreed with Buckingham Palace that the State Opening of Parliament will take place on 21 June 2017.”

The announcement suggests the government could be confident of finalising a deal with the DUP.

A senior Conservative source said dialogue with the DUP was “constant” and that the Northern Irish party supported the principles of the governing party on strengthening the union between Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland, combatting terrorism and delivering Brexit.

Referring to the government’s legislative programme, the source said: “Talks with the DUP have been progressing well, and there is broad agreement on the principles of the Queen’s speech.
