The Russian leader said the military alliance’s presence on the Russian border and around its missile defence systems was a “big, glaring mistake”.

Speaking on Oliver Stone’s Showtime series, The Putin Interviews, the Russian President said he would not stand by as his country faced a major security challenge.

He said: “There are two threats here for us, for Russia. The first is the deployment of missile interceptors in the immediate vicinity of our borders in eastern European countries.

“And the second threat is that anti-missile launch pads could be converted into launch pads for attack missiles.”

Mr Putin said Nato was increasing tensions with plans to install missile defence launch pads on warships in waters surrounding Russia.

He said the US had dragged both countries into a new arms race with Nato giving Russia no other choice but to “give a suitable response to all of these actions”.

“It may be [rough]… but it will be effective. We shall preserve this so-called strategic balance,” he said.

He said there would be a major tragedy and the both sides would be on the losing side a full on war broke out with America.
