Senior figures in the minority Irish party in the new Tory coalition are pushing for the Mr Farage to be part of talks with the EU regarding Britain leaving the bloc, a source close to the discussion said.

The party is said to also be pushing for him to be given a peerage – something he missed out on during this weekend’s Queen’s birthday honours list.

Mr Farage’s communications adviser, Dan Jukes, added fuel to the fire by tweeting about the DUP wanting Mr Farage in their Brexit team.

The Brexiteer also held discussions on Friday with Arron Banks, Ukip’s former largest donor, over whether to launch a new Eurosceptic movement.

A source close to DUP senior figures, told the Sunday Times: “They hold a few cards.

“They want Farage as a lord or a role in government or he and Arron will put something together that will cause trouble for May.”
