The strong quake hit Turkey’s western coast close to the Greek islands of Lesbos and Samos, popular with British holidaymakers.

Witnesses described it as the biggest quake they have felt in Turkey as “everyone ran outside”.

It hit the Aegan Islands and quakes were felt as far away as the capital city Istanbul, Bursa and Çanakkale.

Locals reported how buildings wobbled slightly.

The quake struck a depth of 10km and tremors were felt in the Greek capital, Athens, and the city of Izmir, said the European earthquake monitor.

The earthquake’s effects were also reportedly felt in the Bulgarian capital city, Sofia.

The US Geological Survey has said the quake was actually a 6.3 on the Richter scale.
