The Brexit Commissioner of the Conservative European People’s Party (EPP) in the European Parliament said that while he thought Britain would still follow the path of leaving the European Union (EU), he believes there will now be an “intense debate” over the country’s stance over a hard or soft Brexit.

Mr Brok told Die Welt: “The start of the Brexit negotiations, scheduled for June 19, is seriously at risk due to the election result in Great Britain. I can not imagine that this will work.

“There may, however, be an intense debate about the extent to which London will remain united with the European Union after leaving. Which will be about whether they want a hard or a soft Brexit.”

Mr Brok, 71, added: “It’s a bad result for the UK. For the Europeans the negotiations are now becoming more difficult. We must remain calm and stick to our positions.

“It is now important not to fuel the fire from the outside.”

However the veteran German politician also delivered a word of warning over the upcoming Brexit talks, saying: “We are not there to make concessions. We can not give up our principles.
