PRIME Minister Theresa May has come under fire from a range of economists over her failure to win a majority government in the General Election, with one calling the results “payback” for her “populist slogans, her lack of Brexit strategy and the snap elections”.

The President of the Institute for World Economy in Kiel, Dennis Snower, had harsh words for the Conservative leader who failed to secure a mandate from the British people in yesterday’s election.

He said: “The election outcome is the payback for Theresa May’s populist slogans, her lack of Brexit strategy and the snap elections, which were only held because of a power-political calculus.”

Mr Snower added that the results were also “a vote against a hard Brexit that May loudly propagated but which was never the subject of the original Brexit vote”.

He added: “Anyone who becomes a Prime Minister should have the British people vote on Brexit a second time, when all the details are negotiated and the concrete consequences can be estimated.”

Michael Hewson of CMC Markets in London added to the criticism, saying: “What this means for the Brexit negotiations is difficult to assess. But since the Scottish National Party and the Liberal Democrats want to stay in the Single Market, the probability of Brexit not happening is increasing.”
