It hasn’t been the procession many expected, with Mrs May’s rival Jeremy Corbyn making impressive strides overnight.

Britain may be locked in a hung parliament but Mrs May is still the Prime Minister and will return to Downing Street later and begin appointing ministers to a cabinet.

So what happens next?

What are her key policies?

To introduce a Great Repeal Bill that will transfer EU law into UK law.

Net immigration to be cut below 100,000 a year.

A vow that “no deal is better than a bad deal” with the EU.

Trident nuclear weapons programme will be renewed.

To wipe the deficit out by “the middle of the next decade”.

To raise the National Living Wage for over-25s.

A vow not to increase VAT.

To build at least one million homes between 2015 and 2020.
