Speaking to BBC News as election results continue to pour in, the former Ukip leader said Britain is “staring down the barrel of a second referendum”.

Mr Farage said: “I was thrilled to lead Ukip, to pressure Cameron into offering a referendum. We triggered Article 50, I was thrilled, I thought it was all done.

“If we get a coalition with him [Jeremy Corbyn] and the SNP and whoever else we may well be looking down the barrel of a second referendum.”

Speaking after Ukip leader Paul Nuttall failed to secure a parliamentary seat in what looks like another dreadful night for the anti-EU party, Mr Farage conceded the party was “organisationally weak” but said he had no criticisms of the party leader.

He added: “I think that if we do get a Corbyn coalition then Brexit is in some trouble.”

Asked if he would make a comeback to frontline politics if Brexit is at risk, he said: “I would have absolutely no choice but to do exactly that.

“What’s remarkable about Corbyn’s achievement is he’s getting Remainers in London voting for him but he’s getting Ukip voters around the rest of the country too.”
