And the move is only likely to further aggravate Middle East relations, and escalate into a regional confrontation between Sunni and Shia powers.

Gunmen and suicide bombers from ISIS killed 12 people on Wednesday morning in the first major attack against Iran.

Terrorists launched an assault on the Iranian parliament and a symbolic shrine to Ayatollah Khomeini, the leader of the Iranian revolution, before detonating a suicide vest.

In a statement released hours after the attacks, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard said it held Saudi Arabia responsible for the Sunni jihadist group’s actions.

And they promised revenge and retribution for the “innocent blood spilled” in the first such strike by the jihadists in Iran.

Iranian commanders also pointed to the recent summit between Donald Trump and Gulf Arab leaders, where Saudi Arabia called for a harder line against Iran.
