Donald Trump has criticized London mayor Sadiq Khan just hours after a terror attack in the city on Saturday night left at least seven people dead and 48 injured.

The president took to Twitter early on Sunday morning to criticize Khan for telling residents of his city that there is ‘no reason to be alarmed’ after three terrorists ran over a crowd of people and stabbed several others before being shot dead.

But Khan’s remarks had been taken out of context.

The mayor was talking about an increased police presence in the British capital when he said there was ‘no reason to be alarmed’.
Khan had earlier released a statement condemning the attacks as ‘barbaric’ and ‘cowardly’.

Trump said on Sunday morning: ‘We must stop being politically correct and get down to the business of security for our people. If we don’t get smart it will only get worse.’

‘At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is “no reason to be alarmed!”‘

‘Do you notice we are not having a gun debate right now? That’s because they used knives and a truck!’

In an interview on TV, Khan had said: ‘Londoners will see an increased police presence today and over the course of the next few days. There’s no reason to be alarmed.’

A spokesman for Khan’s office responded to Trump’s tweets, saying: ‘The Mayor is busy working with the police, emergency services and the government to coordinate the response to this horrific and cowardly terrorist attack.

‘He has more important things to do than respond to Donald Trump’s ill-informed tweet that deliberately takes out of context his remarks urging Londoners not to be alarmed when they saw more police – including armed officers – on the streets.’

He added: ‘The advice to the public is to remain vigilant but carry on with their lives.’

Trump’s remarks riled up many Twitter users, who then took the president to task for what they saw as his un-presidential bearing.
‘Yes, idiot, because when people panic, the terrorists win,’ Mike Elgan wrote. ‘That’s why it’s called terrorism.’

‘Leaders comfort citizens,’ wrote Tony Posnanski. ‘They work with authorities and other leaders for answers…not yell “WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!”‘
But others were supportive of Trump, with a number calling for the reinstatement of his travel ban.

In an official statement on Twitter, Khan said he was ‘appalled and furious’ by the attackers, whom he derided as ‘twisted, barbaric cowards.’
