Although the NYPD said there are “no specific threats” of terrorism in New York, officers will still be deployed in crowded areas.

In a tweet, the NYPD said: “There are no specific, credible threats to NYC. Go about your Sat. night, NYPD cops are protecting you. Our prayers are with all in London.”

Governor Andrew Cumo said in a statement: “I have directed state law enforcement officials to step up security and patrols at high-profile locations across New York, including our airports, bridges, tunnels and mass transit systems.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio reassured citizens to “not be alarmed” at the increased police presence, but confirmed his alliance with London.

Mr de Blasio tweeted: “New York City stands with the people of London. Our prayers are with the victims, their families and the courageous first responders.”

President Donald Trump condemned the attack but criticised London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

In a tweet, the US President said it was wrong for Mr Khan to urge Londoners to “not be alarmed” when at least seven people were confirmed to have died.
