Traffic was diverted as armed Garda units placed a road in the north Dublin neighbourhood of Ballybough under lockdown after a Jeep was allegedly found containing Semtex explosives.
Semtex is a general-purpose plastic explosive used in commercial blasting, demolition and in certain military applications.
Bomb disposal experts reportedly seized detonators from the vehicle on Spring Garden Street on Friday afternoon, after officers investigated a “dissident republican activity”.
The men are being held under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and can be questioned for up to three days.
Children who were reportedly playing on a bouncy castle in the area were evacuated for several hours following the discovery, eyewitnesses said.
Ballybough resident Martin told the Irish Times: “It could have been worse. There were children playing on the street.”
