Boffins have just discovered a superbug apocalypse has already started, and last year alone killed 25,000 people across Europe.
They found during a study of 252,000 adults with contagious pneumonia between 2011 and 2015 that antibiotics are “failing” to treat one in four patients.
This brings up a terrifying “failure rate” of 22.1%, meaning many people are having to be rushed to hospital for lifesaving treatment.
The study, revealed at the 2017 American Thoracic Society International Conference, follows worrying figures by the European Union showing antibiotic resistance resulted in 25,000 deaths in 2016.
Now health ministers of the leading countries in G20 (international forum for the governments) are warning the world may return to a pre-penicillin era as antibiotic resistance continues to worsen
