NORTH Korea has been hit with a new wave of sanctions following a series of provocative missile tests and warnings from US officials over Kim Jong-un’s nuclear programme.

A host of officials were added to an existing sanctions list along with a military unit that handles ballistic missiles.

The sanctions, passed by the UN’s 15-member security council, were part of a resolution drafted by the US and China.

Earlier this month, Pyongyang tested an intermediate-range ballistic missile, seen by security experts as a major step towards creating an nuclear-equipped weapon capable of reaching the US.

On a visit to Japan last week, Donald Trump insisted the “North Korea problem” would be “solved”.

The US President, along with Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, vowed to punish “entities” that support Kim’s nuclear missile ambitions.

This led the US treasury to place nine companies – including two Russian firms – on a blacklist for allegedly supporting the North’s weapons programme.

US Defence secretary James Mattis warned yesterday at a forum in Singapore that the North’s nuclear capabilities are increasing and highlighted the danger posed by the Communist regime.
