Temporary Exclusion Orders (TEOs), which introduced by David Cameron two years ago, are now being used Amber Rudd has confirmed.

Following the recent Westminster and Manchester terror attacks the Home Office face heavy criticism after it revealed none had been issued.

But the Home Secretary, speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show, would not reveal how many times TEOs had been used, saying the number “is no longer zero”.

It is understood so far just one has been imposed, according to the Daily Mail.

A TEO, which is approved by a judge before being issued by the Home Secretary, makes it illegal for an extremist to return to the UK without informing the authorities and agreeing to be monitored.

The person’s passport is cancelled and their name added to terrorist and criminal watch lists.

Ms Rudd admitted the authorities did not know how many Britons had returned from fighting with Islamic State or other extremists in Syria.

The Tory frontbencher said: “We don’t know the exact number [who have returned]. What we do know, in engaging with the intelligence services and with the police and with the Border Force, we make sure that they have the tools to track them and to keep them out where we can.”

Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon had previously revealed close to 850 UK-linked extremists are believed to have travelled to join terrorist organisations in 2014, with just under half of those returning.
